Jackson Hospital Performs First Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) in Montgomery

Hospital news | Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Montgomery, AL — Jackson Hospital is proud to announce the completion of the first Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS™) in Montgomery. Performed by Wesley Barry, MD, of Advanced Surgical Associates, only one incision was utilized during this gallbladder removal, eliminating any visible scar in the patient’s abdominal wall.

The procedure was performed through a single skin incision located within the patients’ umbilicus, or belly button. The surgery uses one 20mm incision at the navel allowing insertion of a three-hole port for the flexible scope camera and instruments to be inserted. Traditionally during a laparoscopic gallbladder removal, three incisions are made on the abdomen for the three separate instruments.

“This surgery is great for those who don’t want scars,” said Dr. Barry. “They’re hidden in the belly button after surgery.”

In addition to the cosmetic results, with only a single incision site, patients often recover more quickly. “It provides for less down time and less pain from the incision,” said Dr. Barry.
