During National Hospital Week (May 11-17), Jackson Hospital is honoring Dr. Frank Jackson, 95, for bringing modern medicine to the people of Montgomery. On Wednesday, May 14, we are unveiling a plaque honoring Dr. Frank during a special ceremony to be held at 11:30am in the hospital main lobby. A picnic style lunch will follow.
Dr. Frank – the man, the vision, the legacy…
A native of Alabama, Dr. Frank grew up exposed to the world of medicine since his father was an ear, nose and throat specialist. At a very young age he decided to dedicate his life to improving the health of those around him by becoming a physician as well. In 1936 he received an M.D. Degree from New York University that launched his career. He returned to Montgomery to open a private practice but was temporarily interrupted by military duty as a flight surgeon during World War II. Upon his return home, he joined forces with his father, his brother and several other Montgomery businessmen and opened Jackson Hospital in 1946. In the beginning, Jackson Hospital consisted of 37 patient beds within three wood-frame houses.
In the past 62 years, the Jackson Hospital campus has grown to include an 14-city block area and is now licensed for 344 beds. In the past year alone we admitted nearly 14,000 patients, treating another 42,000 in our emergency department and over 42,000 for outpatient needs. But we could not have provided this care without the help of nearly 1,500 employees and our many volunteers who are committed to caring for our patients and following in Dr. Frank’s footsteps. We are proud of our history and the advancements we have made to help the people of Montgomery.
Dr. Frank had a dream that he made a reality, and for that we are thankful. Jackson Hospital’s success was built on the dedication, compassion and hard work of Dr. Frank and his team. Please join us in thanking him for laying the foundation for Jackson Hospital and for his ongoing support and role in encouraging and promoting medical advancements in our community.
