Jackson Hospital Asking the Community to Give Blood as Blood Shortage Continues

Community news | Monday, January 23, 2023

Contact: Jessica Barefoot

Blood donors are needed as Alabama and the entire nation continue to feel the impact of blood shortages. Last week’s severe storms and tornadoes only escalated the need for more blood donors. Jackson Hospital has already reached a critical level for type O blood and is approaching critical levels for other types. We are seeing an increase in blood usage for patient care. LifeSouth is the sole blood provider for Jackson Hospital, therefore, we encourage donors to donate now.

All blood types are needed to ensure hospitals have the blood that is required to treat trauma cases, surgical procedures and patients needing blood transfusions on a daily basis. Donating blood is safe, takes about an hour, and can save up to three lives.

All blood donors receive a thank you gift, refreshments and a mini-physical, including cholesterol, iron level, temperature, and blood pressure. Find a blood drive or donor center near you at www.lifesouth.org. Appointments can also be made online.

How to Donate:

Visit a LifeSouth donor center or bloodmobile. To find a location near you, visit www.lifesouth.org or call 888-795-2707. Donors must be at least 17 years old, or 16 with parental permission, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, and be in good health. A photo I.D. is also required.
