Montgomery, AL- The American Cancer Society’s annual Relay or Life will be held at Faulkner University and begins Friday, May6 at 6pm and will end Saturday, May7 at 6am. This will be the first time the relay has been held at a location, and this year’s theme will be “Walking the Red Carpet for a cure.” The team captain’s kick-off will be Thursday, January 20 in the cafeteria at Faulkner, and will begin at 5:30pm.
Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Relay starts with a Survivors Lap an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories we’ve achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are creating a world with more birthdays like those of each individual on the track.
After dark, the Luminaria Ceremony honors people who have been touched by cancer and allows relatives and friends to remember loved ones lost to the disease. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants walk a lap in silence.
Anyone can participate in Relay For Life. Friends, families, neighbors, classmates, sports teams, etc., can form their own teams. The only requirement to participate in Relay for Life is the $10 registration/commitment fee (per person).
