Diabetes care at Jackson Hospital

The Jackson Hospital Diabetes Center is here to help you cope and create a lifestyle that fits your needs.

Diabetes is a serious problem if left untreated. It can have damaging and sometimes permanent effects on many parts of your body.

The good news is that you can learn how to control your diabetes. The Jackson Hospital Diabetes Center is here to help you cope and create a lifestyle that fits your needs.

We provide a variety of valuable services for people with diabetes, including dietary consultations, tips for taking insulin, and classes that deal with day-to-day management and complications. Special comprehensive programs deal with insulin pump therapy; diabetes during pregnancy; and more cutting-edge treatment options, such as Byetta, Symlin and Exubera.

Byetta is the “lizard spit” hormone that is isolated from the saliva of the Gila monster. Byetta is an incretin mimetic, a new class of drugs that “mimic” the effects of naturally occurring hormones from the intestines. It can help the body make more of its own insulin and is used mainly with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients.

Symlin is a man-made version of the hormone amylin, which works with insulin to control how quickly sugar enters the blood from the stomach after eating. It is used mostly for type 1 DM patients.

Exubera is the new inhaled insulin. These treatment options are all exciting developments for our patients.

Fees for services at Jackson Hospital Diabetes Center are covered by most major medical insurances. For more information about diabetes treatment, contact your physician or call the center directly at 334-293-8218.
