Infant sleeper recalled after deaths

April 18, 2019—Fisher-Price has recalled its Rock 'n Play Sleeper, which has been linked to 32 sleep-related infant deaths.

People should stop using the sleeper right away and contact Fisher-Price for a refund. (Click on "Recall & Safety Alerts.") Or call their toll-free number at 866.812.6518 weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time for help.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) urged the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to mount a recall of the sleeper on April 9. The AAP said a warning issued April 5 by the CPSC and Fisher-Price did not go far enough.

The cause of death listed for some of the infants was suffocation. It was due to the babies' rolling over in the sleeper.

The original warning issued by the CPSC and Fisher-Price urged parents to stop using the sleeper when an infant reached 3 months of age or was able to roll over. The AAP didn't think the warning was sufficient, noting that infants younger than 3 months were among the deaths.

The AAP said the sleeper didn't meet recommendations for a safe sleep environment for a baby of any age. The AAP recommends babies sleep on a flat, firm surface without any bumpers or bedding.

The AAP also doesn't recommend sleep products that require restraining a baby, as the Rock 'n Play Sleeper does.
